Sump Plug Removal

Everytime I change the oil in my 1971 Triumph Trophy 500 I remove the sump plug and let the cup or so of oil drain out. Reading online some say you should not remove this plug because it can cause the check valve to malfunction. How else can you get all the dirty oil out? Can anybody give me the straight scoop?. Thanks

Mark, I've read this online, too. And I've always ignored this advice.

The online wisdom is that disturbing the sump plug can cause dirt to come loose and block oil passages, possibly causing a malfunction.

I've always removed the plug as a regular part of the oil-change process. It lets any dirty oil drain out of the sump and also gives me a chance to clean the screen and inspect for any traces of metal or other gunk that could be an indication of a future problem.

More importantly, the bike's original manual says to do this.

I agree with Peter. I have always removed the sump plug/cover, allowed the oil to drain and cleaned the screen.  I would much rather check for any debris or metal in the sump plug than worry about some old wives tail of the check valve being fouled.  If you are concerned about he check valve, change the oil every 1000 to 1500 miles.
